Project Support

Bridging the gap from theory to practice: we coach, facilitate, and guide your teams to build lasting internal capability.

Overview

Looking to jump-start your first analysis? We provide the expert facilitation and oversight you’re looking for to ensure success.

Below are the most popular ways we partner with organizations to support STAMP-based approaches.

STPA Project Support

Small-Scope STPA Project

Designed for teams on a tight budget or a compressed timeline, these projects provide a rapid jump-start to your safety efforts. We hold a short series of whiteboard workshops as we work together to apply STPA to your specific application over the course of just a few days.

To demonstrate how to apply STPA to your most challenging technical areas quickly.

Rapid application and “learning by doing” in a workshop setting.

Large-Scope STPA Project

For organizations requiring a comprehensive safety or security study, large-scope projects are months-long efforts that involve deep integration with your team. We will facilitate and oversee the analysis with participation from every team member to ensure technical rigor and depth.

To produce a thorough, high-fidelity analysis of a complex system.

A complete safety/security work product ready for internal or regulatory review.

Iterative STPA Project

System design is rarely linear. Our iterative support follows your development lifecycle, revisiting the STPA analysis as the design evolves from initial concept to final implementation.

Maintaining an “evergreen” safety analysis that matures alongside your engineering requirements.

Continuous hazard identification that prevents costly late-stage design changes.

Integrating STPA into Existing Engineering Environments

STPA does not exist in a vacuum. We specialize in helping organizations weave STAMP-based methods into existing workflows, such as MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) or traditional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262, DO-178C).

We identify touchpoints where STPA outputs can drive requirements, testing, and design trade-offs.

CAST Project Support

Small-Scope CAST Project

Similar to our small-scope STPA offering, this is a fast-paced accident or incident analysis. We help your team quickly move past superficial causes to identify the deeper systemic factors that led to an event. A small project can be accomplished in a few days.

To build experience using CAST while providing immediate clarity on a specific event.

Identified systemic and organizational deficiencies as well as more effective solutions to improve.

Large-Scope CAST Project

For organizations requiring a comprehensive safety or security study, large-scope projects are months-long efforts that involve deep integration with your team. We will facilitate and oversee the analysis with participation from every team member to ensure technical rigor and depth.

To produce a thorough, high-fidelity analysis of a complex system.

A complete safety/security work product ready for internal or regulatory review.

Evaluation Support

We can support your organization’s rigorous evaluations by quantifying the value and effectiveness of STAMP-based approaches (like STPA and CAST). If you need objective data to justify a shift in methodology, we provide expert support to ensure you apply STPA/CAST correctly and prove the benefit in your specific safety, security, reliability, or other operational context.

Evaluations can focus on STPA/CAST results as a standalone effort, with results evaluated in terms of value to the organization or to previously known factors. More rigorous evaluations use a controlled experiment where independent teams are selected to apply STPA/CAST and other methods (e.g., FMECA, FTA, RCA) following strict independence protocols.

If you’ve been involved in empirical research or experimental design, you know the importance of controlling for variables and avoiding external bias. We can help you plan an evaluation that will hold up to scrutiny by the fiercest skeptics.

We’ll  guide you through:

  • Scoping: Select suitable applications and determine if your focus is too narrow or too broad.
  • Team Building: Assemble a core team with the necessary skills before the evaluation starts.
  • Execution: Manage data collection and analysis to ensure objective, defensible conclusions.

Examples of weaknesses to avoid:

  • Choosing a system scope that is too narrow to capture decision-making and control loops, such as purely physical interactions like a sharp object near a flexible fuel bladder

  • Relying on a core team that lacks skills and qualifications to perform STPA correctly (or whatever method you are comparing)

  • Securing an upfront time commitment that is not aligned with the selected system scope, resulting in a comparison based on incomplete results.

Along the way, we’ll share lessons learned from past evaluations and what does or does not work well.

Examples of past comparisons:

  • STPA vs. FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
  • STPA vs. FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)
  • STPA vs. FHA (Functional Hazard Assessment)
  • STPA vs. HAZOP (Hazards and Operability Study)
  • STPA vs. PRA (Probabilistic Risk Assessment)
  • STPA-Sec vs. STRIDE
  • CAST vs. RCA (Root Cause Analysis)

STPA/CAST Organizational Rollout

Whether it’s for safety, security, or reliability, moving from a single successful pilot to enterprise-wide adoption requires a strategic roadmap. We provide the guidance necessary to scale these methods across different departments, including internal training programs, customized tooling recommendations, and the creation of internal STPA/CAST Centers of Excellence.
