STAMP Institute was founded by Dr. John Thomas, a leading authority in system safety and a co-developer of STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis) alongside Prof. Nancy Leveson at MIT.

With roots in systems theory and decades of research at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, STAMP Institute brings MIT-level rigor to organizations worldwide. Our mission is to transform how industries approach safety, security, and reliability through modern, proven methods.

Dr. John Thomas

Founder & Lead Instructor

Dr. John Thomas is an instructor at MIT and the co developer of STPA (System Theoretic Process Analysis), one of the most widely adopted modern hazard analysis techniques. His work spans aerospace, automotive, healthcare, defense, and energy sectors as well as many other high-risk industries.

With over two decades of experience in system safety, Dr. Thomas has trained thousands of engineers and safety professionals worldwide. His instrumental research has been adopted by over 80 organizations, including NASA, the FAA, and major automotive manufacturers.

Dr. William “Dollar” Young, Jr.

Retired USAF Colonel & Associate Research Professor

Dr. William “Dollar” Young, Jr. is an accomplished strategist and technical leader in electronic warfare. He recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after commanding the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, delivering advanced electromagnetic capabilities and missionware across the service.

As the creator of STPA-Sec and FMA-C, Dr. Young developed frameworks used to secure the nation’s most complex systems, and he was a key contributor to NIST 800-160. He is currently an Associate Research Professor at Syracuse University and a member of DARPA’s ISAT Study Group, specializing in secure systems engineering and AI risk.
